About

When Virgin Classics announced its signing of an exclusive recording contract with German soprano Diana Damrau, the press was all ears! To quote BBC Music Magazine: “New Queen for Virgin Classics – Much admired by both critics and opera fans (to judge by postings on YouTube) for her coloratura singing, notably as Queen of the Night at Covent Garden in 2005 and the Salzburg Festival last year.”

This recording programme brings together extremely popular opera arias by Mozart (including the Queen of the Night) with rarities by lesser-known composers, such as Salieri and Righini. By reviving the latter, the disc allows us to rediscover the real artisrty of singing at the time of Mozart.

Diana Damrau, born in Günzburg an der Donau in Germany, studied at the Musikhochschule Würzburg with Carmen Hanganu and in Salzburg with Hanna Ludwig. Her first engagements took place at the Stadtheater Würzburg and the Nationaltheater Mannheim at Oper Frankfurt. In 2002, Ms. Damrau’s international career was launched and she was invited to sing at the most important theatres in Munich, Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg. Soon after, she appeared in Vienna, Brussels, Washington and London and since 2002 at the Salzburg Festival. Ms. Damrau has sung under the direction of renowned conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, Sir Colin Davis, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Riccardo Muti, Ivor Bolton, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Pierre Boulez and Peter Schneider on the opera stage as well as the concert podium.

Possessed of high notes so crystalline and gleaming as to make a Swarowski chandelier seem shabby.” - Newsday

Diana Damrau, perhaps the leading coloratura soprano in the world right now […] her instrument is sizeable, sensuous, and penetrating. She sang wondrously, sinuously, exhibiting her uncanny technical control. What’s more, she’s a fine actress – one who knows that the voice does much of the acting.” - The New York Sun
