About

This is the second of three 4CD boxsets to be released in celebration of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and covers the years which solidified and established the Orchestra as one of the World's greatest. It covers the years 1962 - 1982, and encompasses three vital conductors in the Orchestra's history: Sir John Pritchard, who introduced the Orchestra to opera and who conducted its first Glyndebourne performances in 1964; Bernard Haitink presiding over some of the Orchestra's most exciting years and Georg Solti, whose impact on the podium in the 20th century is unsurpassed.

Few conductors have made such an impact on the worldwide orchestral life as Sir Georg Solti. Arriving in London in 1961 he first cast his spell over the Royal Opera House, and became the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s eighth Principal Conductor in 1979. His tenure was prolific, boisterous and not without controversy - all tangible in the intensity of the era’s performances. Rarely recording other than for Decca, the label he had an association with for over fifty years, he here conducts his only recording of The Firebird, and a truly inspired and fast-paced Tchaikovsky 6.

This is the first non-Decca release of Solti conducting orchestral material, with two of the works (Stravinsky and McCabe) not otherwise recorded by him.

Sir John Pritchard felt an innate personal and artistic connection with the work of Benjamin Britten, illustrated here in celebrated recordings with three first-class soloists: Rodney Friend, the orchestral leader appointed by Pritchard himself, the great lyric tenor Ian Partridge, and the Orchestra’s longstanding Principal Horn Nicholas Busch.

In addition, CD4 pays tribute to the Orchestra’s long-standing commitment to British composers and the commissioning of new music. Presented here are premiere performances of the Concerto for Orchestra by John McCabe, with whom the orchestra has had a lengthy and fruitful association, and the Philharmonic Concerto by Malcolm Arnold, who began his relationship with the Orchestra from within its ranks, as a trumpeter. Also included on this disc is a first broadcast performance of McCabe’s The Chagall Windows.
