About

Johan Schenck is known to history as being an exceptional gamba player, but his opera Bacchus, Ceres en Venus is a historical first: itís the first Dutch opera ever performed.

The Edison Award winning Camerata Trajectina have partly reconstructed the lost music for this opera. They have adapted these pieces for an ensemble that would have originally performed this work in the 1680s: an ensemble with a dozen instrumentalists, including a harpsichord and a bassoon. They have also adapted several songs for three or four voices for the work. Their reconstruction of this work provides a rare glimpse of this talented composer.
