About

Kreisler’s playing style can be characterised as intense with a strong vibrato. His expressive use of portamenti (slides) hark back to an earlier era and he was criticised early in his career by Carl Flesch. Like Stokowski, Kreisler’s arrangements and ‘improvements’ of the classics have also been criticised, but others consider these arrangements to be small gems of perfection. Some find his own compositions are overly sentimental and quaint, but his own recordings of these pieces are remarkably free from schmalz.
