About

The four composers represented in this new Aurora CD are all in their twenties and each of the pieces featured is full of fresh and challenging music. There are clear similarities between the four composers’ treatment of the orchestra, where a fragmented restlessness, and an underlying dark friction in the harmonic sphere pervades the music.

Each of the four is involved in interesting contemporary projects. Jan Erik Mikalsen is writing for Thomas Bloch and the Reykjavik Chamber Orchestra, whilst Jørgen Karlstrøm works for the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. Ørjan Martre is composer in residence with Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. Evan Gardner was among the finalists of Gaudeamus International Music Week 2006 and had a piece performed by the Netherlands Radio Orchestra.

For chief conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Rolf Gupta, working on the ”Lights Out” project is a natural continuance of Gupta’s work with established contemporary composers like Nørgård, Berio, Lindberg, Benjamin, Rautavaara, Francesconi and Maxwell-Davies. He has also been a close associate of Hans Werner Henze and has conducted the Sharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic in a concert celebrating the composer’s 75th birthday, as well as performing the7th and 9th symphonies with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Russian National Orchestra and the West German Radio Symphony Orchestra.
