About

For his fifth recording with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Robin Ticciati conducts a captivating programme of Richard Strauss including Tod und Verklärung and Don Juan.

The scandalous story of the insatiable Don Juan forms the inspiration for a tone poem which is rich in imagination and dramatic flourishes. Tod und Verklärung is further testament to Strauss’s vivid imagination; his exploration of the mystery of death and what may follow was written when he was only twenty-five.

Ticciati is a consummate Straussian, as his triumphant Rosenkavalier at Glyndebourne demonstrated, and his complete control of phrase shape and dynamics delivers performances of tremendous power and lucidity.

Soprano Louise Alder joins Ticciati and the DSO to record what she describes as ‘a fiendish but beloved cycle of Strauss songs’: Sechs Lieder, op.68, affectionately known as the Brentano Lieder.

The is released to coincide with Ticciati’s fourth season as Music Director of the DSO.

Robin Ticciati has been Music Director of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin since 2017 and Music Director of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera since 2014. He was Principal Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra from 2009 to 2018.

Ticciati is a regular guest conductor with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Budapest Festival Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

For more than 70 years the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin has distinguished itself as one of Germany's leading orchestras. The DSO Berlin is also in demand worldwide with many award-winning recordings including a 2011 GRAMMY Award.

Soprano Louise Alder won the Young Singer Award at the 2017 International Opera Awards and the Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize at the 2017 Cardiff Singer of the World competition. She also won the 2015 inaugural Young British Soloists’ Competition.

“A heart-on-sleeve performance …. [Ticciati] embraced Strauss’s epic, operatic flamboyance without a shred of self-conscious indulgence.”
 – Classical Source

“When you consider that Robin Ticciati only entered Berlin two years ago and he is still in his mid-30s, it is impressive what he has achieved.”
 – Politiken

“Alder turns in an incandescent, richly coloured performance which confirms her as the brightest lyric soprano of the younger generation.” – The Arts Desk
