About

Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was the second son of Johann Sebastian Bach, and the most successful. A transitional figure between the Baroque and Classical periods, CPE Bach greatly influenced Mozart and Beethoven, partly because of his sonatas for keyboardss. In the 18th century, the cello concerto remained a relatively new genre, and neither Boccherini nor Haydn had yet composed their concerts at the time CPE Bach wrote his, between 1750 and 1753.

The stormy drama of the first movements and the carefree sincerity of the endings contrast sharply with the delicacy and emotional depth of the slow parts. Renowned Belgian cellist Roel Dieltiens and the legendary Orchestra of the 18th Century collaborate here to prove that they are true storytellers, turning this music into fascinating and colourful stories.

This edition includes a beautiful essay by the popular Dutch novelist Anna Enquist, a friend for decades of the Orchestra and the late Frans Brüggen. Taking as a starting point her visit to the recording sessions of the album in Amsterdam, Enquist explores the musical personality of Carl Philipp Emanuel, especially as regards the relationship with his father's work.
