About

"I had known of George Lloyd for some years, recognizing him as a composer of readily communicable music with a clear and personal style, but it was not until May 1985 that we met, in Copenhagen, where the European Brass Band Championships were being held in the Tivoli Gardens Concert Hall. George Lloyd had been commissioned by the BBC to write the set work – Royal Parks. At once his sense of involvement and lively interest in all that was going on, plus his obvious determination not to miss any of the performances of his music in order to make his own assessment and adjudication, endeared George Lloyd to all who were present...Just one year later an even more exacting and technically challenging work was commissioned for the Mineworkers' National Brass Band Contest held on November 1986. This was Diversions on a Bass Theme...The quintet of pieces on this recording ends with the work which for many will be adjudged to be George Lloyd's outstanding brass band work. English Heritage was commissioned for English Heritage (the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England). Lloyd was an inspired choice. The sense of historic significance inherent in ensuring the preservation of England's fine buildings of the past drew from the composer music which seems to capture the essence of Olde England." – Geoffrey Band
