About

This album contains not only some of the best known marches by the great John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), but an interesting selection of theatrical and dance numbers – waltzes, tangos and foxtrots – from his lesser known works. Extensively researched by the conductor of the recording, Erich Kunzel, from source materials at the Library of Congress, this recording was made on 29 March 1982 (specifically between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.!) at Music Hall in Cincinnati, OH, and was produced by the three-time Grammy winner, Judith Sherman.

Called the “Prince of Pops” by the Chicago Tribune, Erich Kunzel performed with a number of leading pops and symphony orchestras, especially the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, which he led for 32 years.

The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was founded in 1977 out of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Its members are also the members of the Cincinnati Symphony, and the Pops is managed by the same administration. Erich Kunzel, the Pops’ founding conductor, led the Pops until his death in 2009.

“The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra is in great form under Erich Kunzel, with plenty of exuberance in the marches and nice nuances in the other dances when called for. The bass line throughout is very impressive…”
- Gramophone

“…the marches here, violins or no violins, are excellently done, and any band director can learn something from listening to the finesse and tonal purity that Kunzel draws from his splendid orchestra.” - Fanfare

“The orchestra produces a splendid sound with a strong beat that keeps the body on the move, whether the music happens to be a march or one of the dances, which are real charmers. Wonderful sound, too.” - Stereo Review
