About

This seventh volume of the Michael Gielen Edition presents music by late romantic and early modern composers and contains the most first releases in the edition to date. Although Gielen’s extensive opera activities are quite poorly documented, this seventh volume of the Michael Gielen Edition highlights some of the conductor's activities in that area: Le Martyre de Saint-Sébastien by Debussy, ballet music by Ravel, opera-derived works by Schreker, Busoni and Hindemith and – on a soundtrack for a TV production (Kitsch or Art) – scenes from Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. The fact that he presented Der Rosenkavalier (26 June 1985) and two operas by Puccini – Manon Lescaut (18 June 1983) and La Bohème (16 June 1984) – at the Frankfurt Opera is probably little-known. Ten years after Gielen left the Frankfurt Opera he worked briefly with Margit Neubauer, a member of the Frankfurt Opera ensemble, and with the Frankfurt Opera chorus in the passages from Madama Butterfly and Der Rosenkavalier contained on this recording.
