Many people, especially pianists, know Carl Czerny only as a composer of piano studies. But Czerny was more than “just” a master of études, and he was more than “just” a composer with a regular output. His oeuvre contained thousands of pieces, amounting to more than 860 numbered publications. But these symphonies display Czerny’s strengths particularly clearly: within their four-movement form he develops an intelligent musical dramaturgy. The music impresses with its consistency, testament enough for a composer who is still undervalued today. The performances are highly effective: the musicians of the SWR Rundfunkorchester Kaiserslautern give their all, their enthusiasm clearly heard, and Grzegorz Nowak's conducting is full of life and wit.
