About

Named after the platinum-selling American winner of the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in Cold War Moscow in 1958, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition was established in 1962 and its gold medal is recognized as “one of the most prestigious prizes in classical music” (The Guardian). Every four years, winners are chosen by an esteemed panel of judges and awarded significant cash and other prizes, as well as three years of comprehensive career management and concert tours.  Previous laureates include Radu Lupu, Olga Kern, Joyce Yang, Haochen Zhang, Vadym Kholodenko and Nobuyuki Tsujii.

30 young competitors from 16 nations aged between 18 and 30 were welcomed between 25 May and 10 June 10 2017, in Fort Worth, Texas, to compete for Gold and more than $200,000 in prizes.

Decca Gold in collaboration with The Cliburn releases an album of live performances from the winner, Yekwon Sunwoo of South Korea, taken from select recital performances across the competition.
