About

This Ondine recording includes a fascinating programme: Luciano Berioís (1925Ė2003) iconic adaptation of Johannes Brahmsís (1833Ė1897) Clarinet Sonata No.1 combined with Detlev Glanertís (b.1960) recent arrangement of Brahmsís late vocal masterpiece, Four Serious Songs. Also included is Glanertís new orchestral work Weites Land (2013) written in the spirit of Brahms. This disc includes as its soloists award-winning clarinetist Kari Kriikku and German baritone Michael Nagy. This is the second Ondine release of Estonian conductor Olari Elts together with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.

Reviews

Brahmsís vocal lines are given a powerful, burnished-sounding performance here by baritone Michael Nagy. Glanertís orchestration is dark, intriguing and entirely idiomatic; even during the interludes, when Brahmsís voice yields to Glanertís own, the music feels somehow more Brahmsian than Luciano Berioís skilful but more straightforward soloist-and-orchestra arrangement of the Clarinet Sonata No 1, brightly played here by Kari Kriikku. In between comes Glanertís Weites Land, which takes the first notes of Brahmsís Fourth Symphony as the starting point for an edgy, whirling orchestral fantasy.  Erica Jeal
