About

Leonardo Leo (1694-1744) was one of the most influential Neapolitan baroque composers. It was no surprise that he was appointed as the maestro di cappella in the Royal Court Chapel, the most prominent musical institution in Naples. The recordings on this CD offer a unique selection of sacred works representing Leo’s incredible ability to connect ancient and modern styles and create exceptional music. Soprano Ulrike Hofbauer, along with ensemble &cetera, presents a remarkable interpretation of these magnificent works, including two world première recordings: Lezioni del Giovedì Santo and Il figliuol prodigo.

German soprano Ulrike Hofbauer was born in Bavaria and studied singing at the Universities of Wurzburg and Salzburg, where she also graduated as a teacher of vocal skills. Following this, she continued her studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basle. The teachers who influenced her most profoundly were Sabine Schutz, Evelyn Tubb and Anthony Rooley.

Ulrike Hofbauer has performed as a soloist with Collegium Vocale Gent, L’Arpeggiata, La Chapelle Rhénane, L’Orfeo Barockorchester, Singer Pur and Cantus Cölln amongst others and been directed by Andrew Parrott, Philippe Herreweghe, Christina Pluhar, Andrea Marcon and Gustav Leonhardt.

She founded her own ensemble, ‘ensemble &cetera’ to explore centuries of unheard music and opens the public to a whole new view on various composers.
