About

Anthony Burgess, celebrated author of A Clockwork Orange, memorably filmed by Stanley Kubrick, once said, ďI wish people would think of me as a musician who writes novels, instead of a novelist who writes music on the side.Ē Initially thwarted in his desire for a professional musical career, Burgess returned to composition in the mid-1970s, writing prolifically in many genres. His music is mostly tonal but sometimes dissonant, a hybrid of Holst and Hindemith. Mr W.S. is an imaginative evocation of the Elizabethan era while Mr Burgessís Almanack is a variegated work of ingenuity and charm with a nod towards modernism. This is the first recording of Burgessís orchestral music.

Reviews

This disc starts with Mr WS, a jaunty mock-Tudor ballet suite nodding to Waltonís Shakespearian music, and the similarly Waltonesque Marche pour une Rťvolution, both dispatched with spirit if not ideal refinement by [Paul] Phillipsís student orchestra; but keep listening and a more interesting voice emerges in Mr Burgessís Almanack, a sequence of 14 modernist-inflected short movements for chamber ensemble written in 1987.  Erica Jeal
