About

There may be at least a grain of truth in the suggestion that Jaromir Weinberger, exiled in America, committed suicide because of his failure to follow up on the success of his opera Schwanda the Bagpiper. Born in Prague, the 71-year-old Weinberger found himself far away from his beloved homeland, which he had been forced to leave following its occupation by the Nazis, and which was now being ruled by the Communists under Soviet influence. Generally speaking, Weinberger's inability to integrate himself into North American musical life mirrored the difficulty he had, post-1945, connecting with his earlier life in Europe. Any appraisal today of many of Weinberger's compositions will have to take into account the events of their time. Having said that, it is hard to avoid seeing direct or indirect references in many of his works to his one big success, Schwanda the Bagpiper.
