The Kontras Quartet are: Dimitri Pogorelov, Francois Henkins, violin, Ai Ishida, viola and Jean Hatmaker, cello. This Chicago based group came together in 2009. They are currently quartet in residence in Western Michigan University.
On their MSR Classics disc Kontras Quartet play a selection composed between 1987 and 2010, plus there is a rare outing for Stravinsky's Three Pieces for String Quartet written in 1914.
With music by Kevin Volans, Hajime Koumatsu and Dan Visconti - his Ramshackle Songs - this is certainly not a disc of conventional string quartet music. It is, though, written in a tonal form, which listeners seeking a new string quartet experience, will find very rewarding.
