About

Over his 18 years in Birmingham, Simon Rattle’s choice of soloists was part of a greater vision: a mission to transform the orchestra, its audience and its repertoire while simultaneously pursuing his own personal artistic development. He made a conscious effort to nurture long-term partnerships with chosen soloists — who in turn came to prize the CBSO’s generous rehearsal time and Rattle’s collegial, open-minded approach to music-making.

David Gregory played in the CBSO’s first violins throughout the Rattle era. “At first he was purposely bringing in artists who had particular experience to share with the orchestra, from whom we could all learn together. Things were very joined up — we’d have at least a fortnight of rehearsals and concerts before anything was recorded.”

The pianist Peter Donohoe’s personal relationship with Rattle dates back to a student encounter in the Merseyside Youth Orchestra. “A long term relationship between soloist and conductor has the same musical benefits as the longevity of a string quartet, or a duo,” he says. “When conductor and soloist are genuine colleagues, who know what they’re doing together before any rehearsal or recording has started — that’s just so important. And I think the artistic fruits are there to hear.”
