About

Music for a royal excursion

On 17 July 1717, King George I of England ‘went up by Water to Chelsea, and was entertain’d with an excellent Consort of Musick ... composed specially by the famous Handel’. The fifty musicians cost the ... princely sum of £150 – but their hunting horns, trumpets, flutes and the rest so delighted the company that the concert was repeated three times in the course of the evening.

Reviews

… the Berlin period band give a predictably enjoyable, accomplished performance: polished, rhythmically spirited and supple, imaginative in ornamentation… and choice of instrumentation in repeats … Throughout, balancing of the various instrumental groups seems spot on, not least in the F major allegros where the thrillingly brazen horns are ballasted by a rasping, gurgling contrabassoon. For colour, vigour and spontaneous-sounding delight in Handel’s inventiveness, the Berliners are up there with Gardiner…  Richard Wigmore
Gramophone March 2016
The piece’s vitality and brilliance of invention shine forth in the strongest and most appealing orchestral colours in this new recording by the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin … The quality of playing is extraordinary … The period instruments register superbly in a rich and full sonic picture that achieves something close to an ideal textural balance.  George Hall (Recording of the Month)
