Adored by millions of fans for his Chopin playing, Yundi continues his dedication to the composer with an album of the Ballades

Among the most enduring of Chopinís compositions are his Four Ballades. A pioneer of the form, the dramatic and dance-like qualities of his style went on to influence composers such as Liszt and Brahms. Other pieces include Chopinís exquisite Berceuse, op.57 (a beautifully hypnotic lullaby) and the Four Mazurkas, op.17, a set of Polish folk dances. This is Yundiís first recorded interpretation of these works.

Following on from his Chopin Preludes disc comes Li Yundiís first recording of what are arguably the composerís biggest challenges: the four Ballades. They are coolly but compellingly dispatched, with Yundi generally passing up opportunities to score easy dramatic points in favour of taking the long view, shaping the pieces into a single span. There are plenty of thrilling moments, however Ė the ending of the Ballade No 1, for example, which is almost violently stark, and the way the scales rattle crisply and unstoppably up and down in the buildup to the climax of No 4. The Ballades always seem rhythmically grounded; the four Op 17 Mazurkas, which he teams them with, bring out a more rhapsodic, sometimes playful approach.  Erica Jeal
