About

Four major world premieres – two from American composers, one by a Swiss and one American orchestration of a well loved Percy Grainger fantasy – includes the Second Symphony of Thomas Fortmann, inspired by the Tuscan landscape but enlivened by jazz, rock rhythms, and pastoral idylls within a traditional four movement work in Fortmann’s typically unrestrained way. Peter Lieuwen and Robert Nelson’s works are very much of today but speak to a wide audience, and the Australian Percy Grainger’s so-English ‘Lincolnshire Posy’ is given an American makeover in its new orchestration by Merlin Patterson.

The orchestra of the Moores School of Music at the University of Houston, Texas, is one of the leading student bands today, and its concerts and previous recordings reveal an ensemble of superb professionalism and high standards of performance, necessary in these not-too-easy works.

The soloist in the Capriccio is acclaimed violinist Andrzej Grabiec.
