About

MovieScore Media presents the latest addition to its Discovery Collection, Bartek Gliniak’s unnerving music from the Konrad Niewolski 2006 thriller, Palimpsest: A Hypnotic Mystery.

The film follows the investigation of a police officer who is engaged in a cat-and-mouse game with a dangerous killer – but as it turns out, he may be both the perpetrator and the investigator! While Inspector Marek (Andrzej Chyra) tries to find the killer of his former partner Maciek (Tomasz Sapryk), he gets more involved with his personal demons as well as haunting memories of femme fatale Hanna (Magdalena Cielecka), the mesmerizing woman who had lead to the break-up of the partnership a few years earlier...

Polish composer Bartek Gliniak has written music for over 30 films, earning him three nominations for the prestigious Polish Film Award 'The Eagle'. His filmography includes the television series 'Marszalek Pilsudski' (2001), the darkly satiric 'Komornik' (2005), the magical family film 'Teah' (2007), the WWII drama 'Joanna' (2011) and the nature thriller 'Lord of the Carpathians' (2012).

The score for Palimpsest is largely atonal with several sonoristic elements, sound patches and clusters as the composer explains his approach to the film: “We decided that the music ought to be harsh, aggressive at times and hypnotic at others, unreal, now shrill and penetrating and then again - soft and dark. I started experimenting with sonorities, microtones, electronic sounds, and transformations of human voice. During the recording, I was lucky to work with wonderful musicians who trusted me and agreed to countless sound experiments in the studio. Sometimes it took enormous flexibility, openness and patience on the part of the musicians to achieve the desired effect.“

Since the contemporary nature of the score allowed for a bit of additional experimentation, the bulk of the score is organized into four movements as if it were a symphony. The four movements ('Introitus', 'Impetus', 'Indicium', 'Veritas') represent the various emotional stages of the troubled protagonist Marek, while two additional, more traditionally melodic cues ('Hanna' and 'Awakening') represent the intervention of the reality in their own separate tracks.
