About

The sixth of the English Cathedrals to take part in Regent’s popular ‘A Year at…’ series, the Ely Cathedral Choir, in their first recording on the Regent label, sings a selection of music charting a journey through the church’s year as it is observed in the awe-inspiring surroundings of this historic building.

Whether penitential or celebratory, this excellent choir ably draws us into the seasons, while harnessing the warmth of the building with which they engage daily in the annual round of services.

Includes first recordings of new works written for Ely Cathedral Choir: A jazz-inspired arrangement of ‘Away in a manger’ by Pat Brandon; ‘Prayer’ by Ben Parry; and ‘Death be not proud’ by Francis Grier, given its first performance on Remembrance Sunday 2014.

St Etheldreda is Ely Cathedral’s Patron Saint, and the disc also includes the first recording of ‘A Hymn to St Etheldreda’ by Matthew Martin, written for St Etheldreda’s Church, Ely Place, in London.

Also included are all three of Stanford’s very popular motets - ‘Beati quorum via’, ‘Coelos ascendit hodie’ and ‘Justorum anime’ - sung for appropriate liturgical occasions, and rarely recorded works by Cedric Thorpe Davie and Herbert Sumsion.
