Polish by birth, Mieczysław Weinberg escaped to the Soviet Union in 1939 and became a close friend and musical disciple of Shostakovich. Piano music is an important part of Weinberg’s prolific output, his six piano sonatas rivalling those of Prokofiev. From pragmatic but sophisticated pieces for children to the most personal utterances of enigmatic anguish, Weinberg’s music embraces the rich musical heritage of his past and present, his energetic creative spirit uncompromisingly expressing both poignant reflectiveness and defiant hope in a musical language of lyrical intimacy, rustic wit and intense drama.

2008 Grammy Nominee for Best Instrumental Soloist without Orchestra for 20th Century Piano Sonatas on Naxos Records, Allison Brewster Franzetti has received international acclaim from critics and audiences alike for stunning virtuosity and musicality. An accomplished chamber musician, she has collaborated with renowned composers and performers, including Sir James Galway, John Corigliano, Carlos Franzetti, Lowell Liebermann, David Maslanka, Stephen Paulus, Eugenia Zukerman, Julius Baker and Robert White.
