About

Jean Muller was born in Luxembourg in 1979. At the age of six he took his first piano lessons with Marie-José Hengesch at the Conservatoire de Luxembourg.

Mephisto Waltz No.1 became one of Liszt's most popular works, with the version for piano being a transcription of the original score. The version on this CD is the one that Vladimir Horowitz performed at concerts late in the 1970s. It is based freely on Ferrucio Busoni’s arrangement, which combines the savoir-faire and the virtuosity of the finest pianists of all times, highlighting both the diabolical and sensual aspects while retaining the spirit of the original score.

The completion of Liszt’s cycle of 12 Transcendental Etudes in 1852 represented the achievement of over a quarter of a century of personal philosophical quest and musical and pianistic research. Initially conceived as part of a large collection of 24 etudes in all keys, like J S Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, only 12 studies were finally used.
