On the 19th of January 1956 Maria Callas returned to La Scala in the role of Violetta. Following the success of the previous year with Di Stefano, this time Gianni Raimondi awaited her on stage. Maestro Carlo Maria Giulini was conducting and the director was Luchino Visconti, who had already worked with the Divine on La Vestale. It was an unrepeatable artistic occasion. The future Nobel prize winner Eugenio Montale, who was present, spoke of “almost too much brilliance”.
