One of the most prominent polish composers of all time, Witold Lutoslawski (1913-1994) first came to prominence with his 'Symphonic Variations' in 1939. The war years hampered Lutoslawski’s career as he played in Warsaw coffee houses along with Andrzej Panufnik and arranged some 200 pieces for two pianos. In these times he created the celebrated 'Variations on a Theme by Paganini'.
Lutoslawski's growing international fame was fortified by such works as Funeral music and works written with great performers in mind, notably Chain II for Anne-Sophie Mutter. On this CD, Ilian Garnetz is the violinist on Chain II and demonstrates that he truly is one of the mpost promising violinists of the younger generation. Igor Oistrach said of Garnetz “A fascinating, mature artist. A violinist of perfect technique, rich colour, a man of restless temperament and artistic charm, to whom the public always takes a liking”.
