About

The conductor Sergiu Celibidache was a legend in his own lifetime, mesmerising orchestras with his intensity and brilliance, both in rehearsals and in performances - which were always conducted from memory.

The 'Incomparable Celibidache' box-set celebrates the historic release on DVD of rare footage of performances with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Torino della RAI between 1969-70.

Filmed in black and white in 4:3 aspect ratio.

Contents:
Mozart: Symphony No.39 in E Flat K.453 / Schubert: Symphony No.2
These recordings pair the first of Mozart’s last three symphonies, described as ‘among musical history’s most miraculous feats of concentrated inspiration’, with Schubert’s Second Symphony.

Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique H.48
Celibadache in this recording takes on Berlioz’s passionate autobiographical monument to obsessive and unrequited love.

Bruckner: Symphony No.9 In D
Celibidache’s own connection with Bruckner’s last great symphony is powerfully evident in this performance.

Prokofiev: Symphony No.5 In B Flat Op.100 / Strauss: Death and Transfiguration
Prokofiev’s most important wartime composition, conceived as a symphony of the grandeur of the human spirit, is paired with Strauss’s poetic depiction of death and transfiguration.
