Gavin MaloneyAbout
This CD features three major compositions: North, Four Orchestral Pieces and the Symphony from a composer born in Derry but long resident in Dublin. Kevin O'Connell's music has been noted for its intensity of argument, lyricism and attempts at large-scale formal design. These concerns are evident in the three orchestral works presented on this CD (number 8 in the RTE series of contemporary Irish composers).
A recurrent trait in O’Connell’s music is the oblique opening gesture - a flute melody, an oscillation of two notes on the oboe - that beguiles the listener into a false sense of security!
