About

Leopold Stokoswki conducted this symphony more often than any other Tchaikovsky symphony and, like audiences all over the world, considered it the work of genius that it undoubtedly is. The symphony had received a tremendous ovation from the audience at its premiere, conducted by Tchaikovsky on 5 November 1888. He, however, considered it somewhat repellent, insincere and patchy, and it was most distressing for him.

The reaction of the audience, who filled the huge Royal Albert Hall, to the magnificent performance presented by the 91 year-old Stokowski and his young 140-strong international orchestra on this CD is ample evidence of the love for this noble symphony.

The performance was exclusively recorded by Cameo Classics. The rehearsals were also recorded, and illustrate the brevity with which Stokowski was able to instruct the players of many nationalities in order to obtain a performance of such individuality.

Live from the Proms, 1973: Concert and final rehearsals from the Royal Albert Hall, London.
