Johann Kaspar Mertz was one of the greatest guitar virtuosos of the 19th century, the appointed court guitarist of Empress Carolina Augusta and travelling virtuoso through Europe, on the scale of a 21st century pop star.

His compositions are grouped in cycles of Bärden‐Klänge (bardic sounds), evoking the role of ancient bards singing of sagas, legends and fairy tales. The individual pieces are Characterstücke, with titles such as Nachtviolen, Mazurkas, Ländler, Études and Nocturnes.

These are excellent performances on a 6‐string historical 'Stauffer' guitar by Graziano Salvoni, whose previous Mertz album was recently released.

This release includes world premiere recordings.

The booklet includes information on the composer, music, performer and guitar used for the recording.
