Firma Melodiya presents a classical recording of a Russian chamber masterpiece, the String Quartet No.1 by Alexander Borodin. A composer of a universal gift, Borodin displayed a special love for chamber music from his young years. He played several instruments and found pleasure in participating in home concerts. The composer wrote, “Chamber music represents one of the mightiest means for development of music taste and understanding”.
His first compositions were created for chamber ensembles, but his two string quartets are a proof of genuine artistic maturity. The String Quartet No.1 in A major was begun in 1875, when work on the Second Symphony and Prince Igor was in full swing, and completed four years later. The first performance in St Petersburg was not a big success, but very soon it became one of Borodin’s most popular compositions.
The Quartet is performed by one of the leading chamber ensembles in their country. The recording was made in 1965.
