Romanian composer Wilhelm Georg Berger was born into a culture landscape that was a melting pot of traditions. Transylvanian culture represents the belief that it’s possible to preserve one’s own tradition while accepting the traditions of others – music therefore incorporated Catholic, Protestant, Lutheran and Gypsy melodies.
Berger composed his Viola Concerto in 1959. It is a lyrical work entirely removed from the trends of the time, standing singularly and uniquely in the viola literature.
