About

"Impressionism is probably the most fascinating period of modern art. At the time, impressionist paintings were considered so outrageously modern, that it took thirty years for them to be, if not appreciated, at least accepted. Music at the turning of the century, seemed to have followed the same path : it’s at the very end of the 1890 ties that the first early signs of modern music could be heard. It seemed indeed that a new age was appearing – amongst whom Claude Debussy is the symbol for France.

Among the repertoire of composers I have chosen, even if they all do not strictly belong to impressionism, they all embody for my subjective ears, music linked to the representation of the world, that I characterize as so. Debussy, Chabrier,
Fauré, Scriabin definitely belong to impressionism, Ravel, Enescu, Gaubert, Tailleferre and Ibert came slightly later, and were definitely inspired by it. And last but not least, Shchedrine so brilliantly inspired by Albeniz, seems to transcribe the warmth in Bazille’s paintings; Sutermeister who’s gavotte seems to have been composed for Degas’s ballerinas and specially Francaix, who’s music with its realistic simplicity, seems extracted from Manet’s paintings.

I am totally in line with the spirit of Manet’s phrase : 'I paint what I see, and not what the others wish to see'. This quote summarizes alone the artist’s claim to give his personal impression, that of his owns subjectivity … And of mine."
Eric Aubier (Translation : Virginia Olivier)

Eric Aubier has chosen works linked to the impressionist representation of the world for this CD. He includes arrangements of well known works by Mussorgsky, Debussy, Fauré, Ravel, Chabrier, Ibert and Saint-Saens.

The CD is beautifully presented with its own mini impressionist gallery.
