About

One of the great recordings from the EMI catalogue, recorded in 1953 and re-mastered in 1989.

Donizetti composed Lucia di Lammermoor in a remarkable burst of activity, taking just 36 days to complete the work. The premiere in Naples in 1835 was a great success, and the opera marked the beginning of Donizetti’s mature period.

Based on the novel ‘The Bride of Lammermoor’ by Sir Walter Scott, and set during the confrontation between the supporters of King William III and those loyal to the deposed James II, the drama surrounds the Stair family and Lord Rutherford, Edgar of Ravenswood.

Lucia di Lammermoor is rightly considered as one of the most influential pre-Verdian romantic operas, and also Donizetti’s masterpiece. The ‘mad scene’ (‘Ardon gli incensi’) is one of the most famous in all opera, and presents huge technical and physical demands upon the singer.

Cast:
- Maria Callas: Lucia
- Giuseppe di Stefano: Edgardo
- Tito Gobbi: Enrico
- Raffaele Arie: Raimondo
- Valiano Natali: Arturo
- Anna Maria Canali: Alisa
- Gino Sarri: Normanno

"It (The Mad Scene) is filled with the deepest pathos (as in her singing of “Alfin son tua”, in the section beginning “Ardon gl’incensi”, which is quite unforgetable) and it has an impulsive, excitable note in it that conveys the derangement of the poor girl’s mind. With all this goes the most superb vocalisation. Here is certainly some of the finest singing of our time, and there is one moment in the repeat of Spargi d’amaro when the voice is recorded with all the actuality of 3-dimensional sound. It is startling." - Gramophone 1954
