About

Jean-Joseph Cassanea de Mondonville (1711–72) made his mark as a composer with the publication of his Op.1 sonatas for violin and bass continuo in 1733. In just a year after this event he began his meteoric rise in Parisien musical circles, playing violin in the Concert Spirituel. He left Paris for Lille in 1739, where he produced the first of the works upon which his reputation today rests, the grand motets.

Later in his career, back in Paris he was employed in the Royal Chapel as sous-maitre. Later still, he became one of the driving forces in French opera – his Titon et l’Aurore becoming especially influential.

The 1734 publication of his Op.3 Sonatas was quite an event. Not only could these be performed as violin sonatas but, without the quite substantial violin part, as keyboard sonatas as well. They had a third manifestation as Mondonville, some 15 years later produced an edition of these sonatas scored for ensemble, and labelled as ‘symphonies’. Symphonies were becoming the cutting edge of music at the time.

Bach’s sons (CPE and J C), Dittersdorf and Stamitz, to name just a few leading examples, soon dominated this corner of the market. Mondonville’s gallant (and galant) attempt to wrest a bit of the action from the avant-garde composers failed, and soon they fell into oblivion. A pity, as this CD shows that they are delightful works, undeserving of neglect.

To put it simply, they are pure enjoyment from beginning to end…the orchestra play superbly, and since I cannot think of anything else one might want, I can only end by calling this one of the most delightful recordings I’ve heard for quite a while’ - Gramophone

Recording made in 1996.
