About

Pablo Casals was 73 when he brought Prades, situated in the Catalan part of the Pyrenees, into the centre of the musical world in 1950. All the world-famous musicians that were friends of the great cello player came to this little town to open a musical festival, among them Clara Haskil, Eugene Istomin, Isaac Stern, Joseph Szigeti, Alexander Schneider and Mieczyslaw Horszowski.

The famous Catalan Christmas song ‘The song of the birds’ (El Cant dels Ocells) is, still today, an important part of the Festival Pablo Casals. From 1945 onwards, Casals started all his concerts with this song, which tells of liberation and peace. The piece became a Catalan national symbol, the unofficial national hymn of the country.
