About

The Don Cossacks were a frontier militia created in the 16th century, part of the free and democratic Cossack community in Russia. They have a rich vocal tradition; many of the songs are about war, lost love and homesickness. They provide a musical newsreel to the history of this remarkable and resilient people.

'Songs about Mother Russia' are guaranteed to stir the heart and give the listener that tingle factor.

One of the greatest exponents of traditional Russian song was the baritone Michael Minsky. Born in 1918, growing up in Stalin’s Russia, he served in the Red Army in the Second World War. He stayed in the West after the war and took over the world famous ‘Original Don Cossack Choir’ after its founder Serge Jaroff died.

Minsky had a successful career as an operatic baritone and toured the choir with singers such as Nikolai Gedda. Minsky also collected and catalogued Ukranian and Russian traditional songs, and his anthology is a major source for those interested in studying this remarkable music.
