About

Giovanni Palestrina is one of the giants of late Renaissance music. Probably better known for his religious works, he also composed a large number of madrigals. In this genre he may not have been the innovator he was for the church. Nevertheless – or maybe even because of this – his madrigals were much appreciated and (re)printed at the time.

This is a recording of the first book of madrigals by Palestrina. They are set for four voices despite the contemporary fashion to employ five parts. Though based in Rome and heavily involved with the church, the subject of these madrigals is the usual one, love.

Fine lively performances are given by the singers of Concerto Italiano with lute accompaniment by Andrea Damiani.
