About

Boccherini is most associated with chamber music but his numerous string quintets and pieces for cello more readily spring to mind than the sonatas for keyboard accompanied by violin (and cello). Brilliant Classics features these unfamiliar works in this set however: two CDs with a total of 12 such sonatas.

The creation of the first six sonatas (Opera V) has everything to do with a particular keyboard player in that they were dedicated to the extremely talented Madame Joui de Brillon. Unlike most of the contemporary sonatas by other composers, Boccherini gave the violin a more prominent part. In his second set of sonatas, Boccherini wrote for his own instrument, the cello. Far less known, though, than his quintets, this music at least equals their beauty.

A most interesting set of recordings. With Franco Angeleri (fortepiano) and Enrico Gatti (violin) in Opera V, and Laura Alvini (fortepiano), Enrico Gatti (violin) and Roberto Gini (violoncello) in the 6 sonatas with violin and cello accompaniment.
