About

In recording you can get to a point of perfection and precision not possible elsewhere, and, more important than anything, of real untrammelled music-making.” – Herbert von Karajan

Herbert von Karajan was one of the 20th century’s supreme conductors – unsurpassed in his ability to mould an orchestra and to achieve his ideal sound. He was also a master in the recording studio, with over 250 albums produced for Deutsche Grammophon – the label with which he is most closely identified.

This is a specially-priced 10-CD box set which contains celebrated recordings from 1959 to 1979 - including
his first stereo recording for Deutsche Grammophon, his artistic partnership with the young Anne-Sophie Mutter, and much more - and a lavishly-illustrated full-colour 32-page booklet with newly commissioned article.

The 10 CDs are packaged in digipacks with original cover artwork and the couplings are generous – 2 LPs on 1CD is the norm. The 10 CDs are also available separately.

"To have worked with Herbert von Karajan is one of the greatest experiences of my artistic life. The sound, which he produced together with the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic orchestras, was something unique and then there was also the depth of his music-making. Even in the rehearsals you discovered things you had never heard before. It was not without reason that Carlos Kleiber sat through many of them." (Plácido Domingo)

"He was very supportive. He was very demanding, strict and rigorous but at the same time, during a performance he did everything possible to help a singer and let a singer feel comfortable and at home. He had a wonderfully logical way of seeing and feeling the music and I felt it was a treat to perform with him and learn so much." (José Carreras) (from Classic Record Collector, summer 2006)
