About

Musica Mexicana is a very special issue; a series of eight discs with music by the major 20th-century Mexican composers. These include Carlos Chávez, Silvestre Revueltas, Manuel Ponce and others. The State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra is directed by Enrique Batiz.

Twentieth century Mexican classical music was dominated by expressions of nationalism. Ponce, a pioneer in this approach used a wide range of folk music in his compositions. The next generation, with Chávez being the most influential, attempted to return to earlier Aztec sources. This music is about assimilating diverse elements in order to create a coherent whole.

There are many more nationalist composers, including a number of Chávez’s pupils, for instance Moncayo and Jiménez. In their work they integrate Mexican elements within traditional classical structures like the symphony.
