About

Artur Rubinstein (1887-1982) recorded three cycles of Beethoven Concertos - 1956 (Krips), 1963 (Leinsdorf) and 1974 (Barenboim) all for BMG in the studio.

This live reading of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.4 comes from a celebrated series of concerts Rubinstein gave in 1967 at the Royal Festival Hall which were also televised by the BBC. The Piano Concerto No.4 (along with No.3) was the most frequently played Beethoven concerto in Rubinstein's repertoire, Beethoven being relatively peripheral in the pianist’s career up to the age of 70!

In contrast, Saint-Saëns’ Piano Concerto No.2 was frequently played and Rubinstein recorded it three times in the studio. This live performance from 1957 in the Royal Festival Hall comes from the same concert as the Schumann Concerto issued on BBC Legends (BBCL 4152-2).

The shorter pieces, notably the Chopin, are all central to Rubinstein's repertoire. The stereo Chopin Scherzo No.2 was the encore Rubinstein played after his performance of the Brahms Concerto No.1 heard on BBCL 4187-2. The short Villa Lobos pieces are comparatively rare.
