About

This CD encapsulates a great partnership (which lasted for more than 30 years) of Janet Baker and Raymond Leppard who both started coming to Benjamin Britten's Aldeburgh Festival in the late 1950s. This recital had been especially requested by Britten and was wide-ranging both in repertoire and form (arias, cantatas and songs), selected by Leppard to suit Baker who “couldn't sing anything well unless she was committed to the words.” (Leppard).

This stereo recital from 1971 features typical Aldeburgh composers - Purcell and Monteverdi, mixed up with some Leppard 'finds' - Graziani, Mister Barringcloe (a totally unknown British composer) and Pelham Humfrey together with two of Baker's favourite composers, Schubert and Fauré, ending with encores from Gounod and Handel.

A 1969 BBC interview with Janet Baker and Marjorie Anderson completes this recital from Aldeburgh.

Recorded: Aldeburgh Festival, 14 June 1971 and BBC Studios, London, 22 October 1969 (interview)
