About

New recordings of the Liebeslieder-Walzer Op.52 are rare, especially with such esteemed artists at the peak of their careers. They are among the most cheerful, light-hearted and tuneful works in Brahms' output.
Musically speaking, these pieces derive wholly from the spirit of the Viennese waltz, the ländler and other forms of Viennese popular music. The Liebeslieder-Walzer Op.52 are basically a dialogue between the sexes. Numbers for all four voices alternate with duets and a few pieces for solo voice.
In 1875 Brahms followed up this first collection with fifteen more pieces Op.65. The Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer are often described as a continuation of the Liebeslieder of 1869. However, this work clearly stands apart from the earlier set in character. Whereas in the Liebeslieder Op.52 it was the cheerful, delightful side of love that dominated, now Brahms dealt above all with its sorrows and its dark side.
From cheerful flirtations to the despair of broken hearts, the Liebeslieder-Walzer run the whole gamut of love. This great classic of the Romantic repertoire is interpreted here by a splendid vocal quartet.
Since the beginning of the 1998/99 season, Marlis Petersen has been a permanent member of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf. Besides a series of concerts with Helmuth Rilling and René Jacobs, she has appeared as a soloist in all the foremost concert halls in Europe, and since 1997 has worked regularly with Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra.
The Greek-German mezzo-soprano Stella Doufexis studied with Aribert Reimann and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. She received considerable attention in the spring of 2004 when she stepped in at the last minute to sing Dorabella in a concert performance of Così fan tutte with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. Since the autumn of that same year she has been a company member at the Komische Oper in Berlin, where she has been extremely successful.
Werner Güra is much appreciated as a lied interpreter and gives recitals in such venues as the Wigmore Hall in London, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Lincoln Center in New York, the Barcelona Schubertiade and the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg. Among his highly successful lieder recordings for harmonia mundi are programmes of Schubert (Die schöne Müllerin, Schwanengesang), Schumann (Dichterliebe) and Wolf (Mörike-Lieder) - all selected as 'Editor's Choice' by Gramophone magazine or awarded a Diapason d'or.
Konrad Jarnot studied with Rudolf Piernay at the Guildhall, where he received the Gold Medal in 1997, and with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He is particularly known in song repertoire. His recital appearances have included the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch, the Beethoven Festival in Bonn and the Schwetzingen Festival.
