About

This stereo broadcast of a Royal Albert Hall concert given in May 1974 represents the last public appearance of Leopold Stokowski in England. The 1974 concert had been issued on BBC Radio Classics in 1995 (the whole series was deleted in 1997) and received excellent reviews - "electrifying", "highly compelling music making" - in the Penguin Guide of the time. The remastering and the reverberant acoustic of the Albert Hall was the only source of criticism.

BBC Legends have now gone back to the original master tapes and had a completely new tape prepared by Paschal Byrne.

The rarity on this disc is Klemperer's Merry Waltz. The Nováček is a bonus track from 1964 which has never officially been issued before.

Stokowski's interpretations are very straight with no score "tampering". His BBC Legends discs are always well received by the press.
