About

Brilliant Classics presents one of the very few recordings of Martucci’s orchestral works. Giuseppe Martucci (1856-1909) started out as a child prodigy, and became a pianist of international stature. At 25 however, he exchanged the piano for the baton. Almost 10 years earlier he had already composed his first works for piano and many more were to follow.  Among these are also a number of works for orchestra, including two symphonies and two piano concertos. His smaller orchestral pieces such as the very popular Notturno and Novelletta – orchestrations by Martucci himself of two of his piano pieces - are of an attractive lightweight character reminiscent of Elgar.

Martucci wrote ‘absolute’ music, a language not based on any extra-musical ideas. He often conducted Wagner’s music yet Martucci’s style is more akin to the tradition of Beethoven, Schumann and Brahms. Toscanini conducted many of his works. This set of 4 CDs also includes ‘La canzone di ricordi’ for soprano and orchestra. Inspired performances are given by the Philharmonia Orchestra under Francesco D’Avalos and several soloists. This recording is recommended by the Penguin CD Guide.
