About

It was in 1936, the year that Shostakovich completed his Fourth Symphony, that Pravda, the main Soviet newspaper, published its infamous article condemning his opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk as "chaos instead of music". Perhaps for this reason this, one of Shostakovich's most interesting works, remained unheard for 25 years and was not performed until 1961.

André Previn
was principal conductor of the LSO from 1968 to 1979 during which time they made many superb recordings for EMI, among which are several of the symphonies by Shostakovich. The Previn/LSO recording of Symphony No.8 is scheduled for release on Encore in 2008.
