About

Klaus Tennstedt (1926-1998) was born in Merseberg (East Germany) and after periods of conducting the Dresden Staatskapelle and acting as Music Director of the Dresden Opera, defected from East Germany in 1971. He literally exploded onto the US scene making his memorable debut in Boston in 1974, followed by equal success with concerts in Chicago, Washington and New York during the 1970s through to the 1980s. He became Music Director of the London Philharmonic from 1983-1987 when he resigned due to ill-health and during this time Tennstedt concerts became instant sell-outs for London audiences.

The Schubert Symphony No.9 was never commercially recorded by Tennstedt. The BBC did not have this broadcast so it has been sourced from outside the BBC archive in excellent stereo sound. The performance from 1984 has the usual hallmarks of the searing intensity which the conductor produced in live concerts.

Weber's Oberon Overture precedes the Schubert symphony in the concert and has been issued because it differs to the performance already released which Tennstedt conducted in 1990 (BBCL 4158-2). It has also been sourced from outside the BBC archive.

Brahms's Tragic Overture was also never commercially recorded by Tennstedt and follows on from his recent acclaimed release of Brahms's Symphony No.3 (BBCL41672). The recording, from 1983, is from the BBC archive.
