About

Among the many brilliant musicians of the 'Golden Age' of English lute music, none shines brighter, yet is more neglected than Daniel Bachelar (1572-c1610). Bachelar's music has long been known to lutenists and musicologists, but the lack of a modern edition of his works and their extraordinary technical demands have conspired to keep his genius from reaching a wider audience. On this new CD, the first ever devoted entirely to Bachelar's work, Paul O'Dette presents twenty-six delightful Pavans, Galliards, Almaines and Courantes by one of England's greatest lutenists.

Paul O'Dette has been called "the clearest case of genius ever to touch his instrument" (Toronto Globe and Mail). An avid researcher, he has worked extensively on the performance and sources of 17th century Italian and English solo song, continuo practices and lute technique.

He has made more than 100 recordings, several of which have been nominated for Gramophone's Record of the Year Award. Each volume of John Dowland, Complete Lute Works received the Diapason d'Or, and the set as a whole (HMU907160/64) received the Diapason d'Or de l'Année.
